M3, who have their offices in the former pub, The Three Kings, in Mitcham wanted to reinstate the gold leaf lettering that was originally on the front of the building. They had an old photograph of the pub from the 1920s/1930s and they wanted to try and replicate the lettering in a similar style – was this something we could do?
This was right up our street – we love nothing more than making lettering to traditional styles and especially in gold leaf.
After matching the letter style as closely as we could from the photograph we had, we carved the letters from a material called HDU. This was no easy task given that the letters were over 400mm high and 75mm thick! After applying the various primer coats to the finished letters, we then gilded the letters in 23.5ct gold leaf.
The letters were dazzling when finished – and we were impressed ourselves with how “gold” they looked.
The scaffolding is finally down from the front of the building, and the letters look great. Another very satisfying job for Butler dSigns.
